Google’s Verily Life Sciences is planning a pilot program to release millions of mosquitoes across parts of Florida and California. This isn't a widespread initiative, but rather a targeted effort concentrated in specific areas within those states. The project aims to utilize male mosquitoes that do not bite, to reduce populations of disease-carrying female mosquitoes. Instead of a single, large release, the mosquitoes will be introduced into the environment in phases over a two-year period. This gradual approach is designed to minimize any potential, sudden impact on the local ecosystem. The goal is to explore a novel approach to controlling mosquito-borne illnesses and monitoring the effectiveness of this biological control method. The project seeks to find ways to curb the spread of diseases like Zika, dengue, and West Nile virus.
