Mateusz Hen, a surgeon and deputy director of the Powiat Hospital in Gniezno, has received at least seven final criminal convictions, according to investigations by Wirtualna Polska. Due to a conviction for assault, and based on the provisions of “lex Kamilek” legislation, the doctor is prohibited from treating children. Consequently, when children require medical attention at the hospital in Gniezno on days when Dr. Hen is on duty, they must be referred to another hospital. This creates a disruption in pediatric care access within the region. The convictions raise serious questions about patient safety and the vetting process for medical professionals. The "lex Kamilek" law is intended to protect children from individuals with a history of violence. This case highlights the practical implications of the law within the Polish healthcare system.
