Gilgit-Baltistan’s Supreme Appellate Court has suspended election results for candidates in three constituencies, further delaying the formation of a regional government following elections held on June 7th. Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Shamim Khan issued the suspensions concerning candidates from GBA-9, GBA-15, and GBA-17, responding to petitions challenging their eligibility and the validity of the vote counts. The cases involve disqualifications related to asset declarations and challenges to decisions made by returning officers and election tribunals. Despite a directive from the Chief Election Commissioner, consolidated results for GBA-16 also remain unreleased. One suspended candidate, Fida Muhammad Nashad, had previously been cleared to contest after an initial disqualification, only to have the decision reversed by the court. The suspensions create uncertainty and prolong the political deadlock in Gilgit-Baltistan, as the court reviews the contested outcomes.
