Ghana is again pressing the African Union (AU) to address escalating xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in South Africa. President John Mahama reiterated this call following weeks of violence against immigrants accused of taking jobs and resources. Over 160,000 foreigners have reportedly left South Africa in the last two months, straining relations with other African governments. Two Ghanaians have also filed a complaint with the International Criminal Court (ICC) seeking an investigation, a move South Africa deems "opportunistic." While the AU Commission President acknowledged the urgency of the issue in February, action has been slow. Mahama expressed concern that South African authorities aren’t responding adequately and alleges financiers of the attacks remain free, urging the AU to formally address the crisis for a constructive solution.
