A Ghanaian policy think tank, the Centre for Social Innovation and Democratic Thought (CSIDT), is advocating for a major shift in how the country addresses flooding. The CSIDT recommends that 80% of the GH¢350 million flood response fund be allocated to preventative measures, instead of solely focusing on relief efforts after disasters strike. This proposal stems from a belief that Ghana's current reactive approach is unsustainable, leading to recurring deaths and increasing economic damage. The organization stresses the need to build resilience to future floods through proactive investment. By prioritizing prevention, Ghana can mitigate the impact of these disasters and protect its citizens and economy. The CSIDT warns that continued reliance on post-disaster response will only exacerbate the problem.
