A new policy brief from the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) reveals significant economic potential in improving Ghana’s sanitation systems. The study, titled “Waste or Wealth?”, estimates that for every cedi invested in waste management and sanitation, Ghana could see economic benefits of up to GH¢556 annually. This return is achievable by increasing spending to align with recommendations for lower-middle-income countries. Researchers argue that sanitation should be prioritized not just for environmental and public health reasons, but as a high-yield economic investment. The report highlights the substantial economic gains possible through enhanced waste management infrastructure and practices. This finding underscores the potential for a significant boost to Ghana’s economy through strategic investment in sanitation.
