The Director-General of Ghana’s Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Kwasi Afreh Biney, has warned against quickly increasing the country’s retirement age. Biney suggests that extending the retirement age could potentially delay opportunities for younger generations entering the workforce by as much as seven years. This is due to fewer positions becoming available as older workers remain employed for a longer duration. The SSNIT boss emphasized the need for careful consideration of the potential consequences before implementing any changes to the current retirement age. He implied that a hasty decision could exacerbate existing challenges related to youth unemployment and career progression. The caution comes amid ongoing discussions about pension sustainability and demographic shifts in Ghana.
