Ghana is considering establishing a Centre of Excellence for Hearing, Communication and Cochlear Implant Care to improve access to specialized hearing services and bolster the country’s healthcare infrastructure. The envisioned centre will offer a comprehensive range of services, from initial hearing screenings and ENT care to advanced treatments like cochlear implants, alongside speech therapy and rehabilitation. Discussions surrounding the proposal took place with representatives from the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Semorile Holdings, LLC, alongside Ghanaian officials including Ambassador Victor Emmanuel Smith and Maabena Webb of Region17. Participants stressed the importance of a Ghanaian-led approach that integrates with, rather than duplicates, existing healthcare and academic institutions in Ghana. The initiative aims to create a sustainable, locally-driven system for addressing hearing loss and improving communication accessibility throughout Ghana. The centre’s creation is expected to significantly strengthen local capacity to provide quality hearing care.
