Ghanaian health officials are warning of a critical risk of early death for children born with sickle cell disease. Approximately 15,000 babies are born with the condition annually in Ghana, constituting around two percent of all births. Without timely diagnosis and ongoing care, up to 90% of these children may not survive past the age of five. Dr. Enam Sefakor Bankas, co-founder of Heale, highlighted the urgent need for improved healthcare access and early intervention strategies. The warning underscores the significant public health challenge posed by sickle cell disease in the country. Addressing this requires increased awareness, screening programs, and consistent medical support for affected children.
