The Ghanaian government is legally challenging Canada’s refusal to grant a visa to footballer Thomas Partey. The case was presented before the Canadian Federal Court on June 16th, seeking to overturn the decision. Partey, currently playing for Villarreal, was denied entry due to pending sexual assault allegations in the UK, where he will be tried in 2027. He has pleaded not guilty to seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault related to incidents between 2020 and 2022 while playing for Arsenal. The visa denial prevents Partey from joining the Ghanaian national team for their World Cup qualifying match against Panama in Toronto. Ghana has formally protested the decision, arguing it hinders their participation in the tournament. The court hearing took place as the team prepares for its opening World Cup game.
