Germany has introduced a new initiative called the “Opportunity Card,” designed to streamline legal pathways for skilled workers from non-European Union countries seeking employment. The card allows qualified individuals to come to Germany for up to one year to search for work. Applicants must have demonstrable qualifications and sufficient financial resources to support themselves during their stay in Germany. Points are awarded based on qualifications, language skills, and age – a system similar to other German immigration programs. Successful applicants do not require a job offer to initially obtain the card, easing the initial barrier to entry. This program aims to address growing labor shortages across various sectors in Germany and bolster the national economy. The German Federal Government hopes the “Opportunity Card” will position Germany as a more attractive destination for global talent.
