A German court has sentenced an 81-year-old man to life in prison for the 1994 murder of American tourist, Amy Lopez. The man confessed to the crime at the start of the trial, admitting to abducting, sexually assaulting, and fatally stabbing the 24-year-old victim. Lopez’s body was discovered by children near an abandoned building where the perpetrator lured her. The case remained unsolved for over three decades until advancements in DNA technology allowed investigators to re-examine old samples. The suspect was arrested in February 2026 at a care facility near Koblenz, where he resided. The conviction brings closure to a long-standing cold case, highlighting the power of modern forensic science.
