The Financial Services Council (FSC) is calling on the New Zealand Government to take the lead in reforming KiwiSaver contribution practices. FSC chief executive Kirk Hope believes government action is crucial, stating that if the Government phases out the practice of including KiwiSaver contributions within total remuneration packages, other employers will likely follow suit. This practice effectively reduces an employee’s take-home pay while framing the employer’s KiwiSaver contribution as part of the overall compensation. The FSC launched its election manifesto on Thursday, highlighting this issue as a key priority. Hope emphasized the Government’s position as the nation’s largest employer gives it significant influence over industry standards. A change in government policy could therefore create a ripple effect, benefiting employees across the country and improving KiwiSaver participation. The FSC believes addressing this issue will improve financial wellbeing for New Zealanders.
