France’s proposed ban on social media for children under 15 has been rejected by the Constitutional Council, which deemed the law insufficiently developed and unconstitutional. The council argued the ban represented a disproportionate infringement on freedom of expression and communication. While acknowledging the need to protect minors, the council stated the law failed to establish specific risks to safety and health posed by social media platforms. Concerns were also raised regarding a breach of privacy rights, as verifying users' ages for access lacked defined regulations. This legislation, a key promise from President Macron, would have been the first of its kind in Europe. Macron has now tasked the Prime Minister with drafting a legally sound revised version, aiming for implementation before spring 2027.
