A new exhibition at Cambodia’s National Bank museum explores the significant influence of the French language on modern Khmer. The exhibit highlights numerous French loanwords commonly used in everyday Cambodian speech, often without speakers recognizing their origins. Terms like “salon,” “garage,” “billet,” “banque,” and “essence” are among those featured, demonstrating a lasting linguistic impact. The exhibition details how these words became integrated into Khmer during the French protectorate period and continue to be used today. It aims to educate Cambodians about this often-unacknowledged aspect of their linguistic heritage. The display offers insight into the historical and cultural connections between Cambodia and France through the lens of language. The exhibition is currently open to the public at the Preah Srey Içanavarman Museum of Economy and Money.
