The ruling Frelimo party in Mozambique has dissolved all of its organizational structures within Gaza province, from local cells to the provincial leadership. This sweeping decision, made during a recent party commission meeting, initiates a process of restructuring and new internal elections. The move comes after a prolonged, four-year internal crisis marked by criticism of the provincial first secretary, Daniel Matavele, and accusations of questionable management and political favoritism. Specifically, concerns were raised regarding the inclusion of relatives, including Matavele’s son, Ivan Jones Matavele, on lists for parliamentary positions. Militants allege a lack of transparency and unfair promotion practices within the party structure. This intervention in Gaza, a historically strong Frelimo region, represents an unprecedented step towards addressing the internal turmoil and restoring party cohesion. The dissolution aims to pave the way for new leadership and address longstanding grievances within the province.
