A large-scale fraud has targeted two banks operating between Abidjan and Dakar, resulting in the loss of 1.9 billion Francs CFA. Scammers used fraudulent wire transfer orders to divert the funds into personal accounts in Senegal, where they were quickly withdrawn. Investigators from the Dakar Gendarmerie’s Research Section have apprehended a first group of suspects and presented them to the Financial Judicial Pool, a specialized court for economic and financial crimes. The suspects await a decision regarding their fate, with potential for a judicial investigation and detention. This type of fraud, relying on falsified documents mimicking legitimate client instructions, exploits weaknesses in bank verification processes. Utilizing personal accounts as a key step allows for rapid fund extraction, hindering detection. The scheme highlights the vulnerability of financial institutions to sophisticated forgery rather than complex cyberattacks.
