France has launched the "Refurbot" project to repurpose decommissioned AMX-30B2 tanks into unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). A prototype of this autonomous combat system was recently unveiled at the EuroSatory 2026 international defense exhibition. The initiative aims to breathe new life into hardware that has been out of service for nearly three decades. This strategic shift is heavily influenced by combat lessons learned from the war in Ukraine. The conflict has demonstrated the increasing utility and necessity of terrestrial robots on the modern battlefield. By converting old hulls into autonomous units, France seeks to enhance its tactical capabilities without the risk to human crews. The project represents a fusion of legacy armor and cutting-edge robotics.
