France has reported its first confirmed case of Ebola, a humanitarian worker recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The patient, a medical professional, was working in an area affected by the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the DRC. French health officials state the individual is currently in stable condition and has been admitted to a specialized unit. The outbreak in the DRC has resulted in 254 deaths among 1003 confirmed cases, as of recent reports. The World Health Organization declared the epidemic a public health emergency of international concern in May, estimating circulation began roughly two months prior. Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with infected bodily fluids and causes severe hemorrhagic fever.
