Health authorities in the Netherlands have confirmed a fourth case of West Nile fever this year, this time in a woman from Amstelveen. The patient developed meningitis as a complication of the virus, a rare outcome. This marks only the fourth instance of locally acquired West Nile virus infection documented in the country. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) is investigating the source of the infection and monitoring for further cases. Previous cases were reported in the provinces of North Holland, Flevoland and Gelderland. The RIVM advises people to protect themselves from mosquito bites, particularly during dawn and dusk, as the virus is spread through mosquito bites. While most infections are mild, this case highlights the potential for more severe complications.
