A former ward chairman and urban order management team leader in Hanoi have been sentenced for accepting bribes related to illegal construction. Đặng Thanh Tùng, ex-chairman of Thanh Trì ward, and Bùi Thanh Nhã, former head of Hoàng Mai district’s urban order management team, were found guilty of receiving bribes and overlooking the construction of six unauthorized buildings. The court determined they failed to enforce regulations, allowing the illegal building to proceed. This case highlights corruption within local governance and the challenges of controlling unauthorized construction in rapidly developing urban areas. The sentences reflect a crackdown on official misconduct related to urban planning and development violations. The convictions aim to deter similar abuses of power and reinforce the rule of law in Hanoi.
