A request to lift the parliamentary immunity of former European Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos has been submitted to the Greek Parliament. The request stems from an arrest warrant issued by Belgian authorities as part of the ongoing “Qatargate” investigation into alleged corruption and influence peddling. The request was transmitted through the Ministry of Justice, initiating a formal procedure within the Greek legislature. Avramopoulos, who previously served as Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, has vehemently denied any involvement in the allegations. He has stated he will not invoke parliamentary immunity to shield himself from the investigation. The case centers around accusations that Qatar attempted to influence decisions within the European Parliament. Further proceedings will now unfold within the Greek parliamentary framework to determine whether Avramopoulos’ immunity will be waived, allowing Belgian authorities to pursue their investigation.
