Data collected by the Trama Intercultural Center in Terre, Emilia Romagna, reveals a concerning rise in forced marriages. In 2025 alone, 58 women across four of the region’s nine provinces were compelled into marriage. The victims originate from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Morocco, with nine out of ten seeking assistance from anti-violence centers after the ceremonies had already taken place. Crucially, 65% of these women only sought help through the intervention of teachers or social workers. The tragic case of Saman Abbas underscores the lengths to which some extremist families will go to enforce their will. Furthermore, forced pregnancies are sometimes used to coerce unwilling women into compliance.
