A massive wetland restoration project in Southwest Florida, known as the Picayune Strand Restoration Project, has reached completion. Initiated to reverse the ecological damage caused by a 1960s subdivision plan that drained 55,000 acres of wetlands, the project focused on re-establishing natural water flow. Crews removed over 260 miles of roads originally built for the development and filled in nearly 50 miles of canals constructed for drainage. The extensive effort aims to revitalize the region’s wetlands, significantly improve water quality, and enhance wildlife habitats.
