A riverbank beautification project along the Selbe River in Ulaanbaatar is facing heavy criticism after recent flooding washed away significant portions of the newly constructed stone walkways. Despite being 80% complete and funded with 6.2 billion Mongolian Tugrik from the city budget, the project is deemed poorly planned by city officials, including Mayor B. Purevdagva. The primary issue is that the beautification work was undertaken in a floodplain without adequate consideration for potential flood damage. The mayor noted seeing stones washed away during a visit in June, highlighting the need for flood-resistant planning. Residents have also filed numerous complaints regarding the project’s failures. Authorities are concurrently constructing a five-stage reservoir on the river to mitigate future flooding risks, part of a larger 20.5 billion Tugrik project that included pedestrian bridges and beautification efforts.
