A city council member in Akaa, Finland, Anton Murola, is under fire for using racist and derogatory terms to refer to people with foreign backgrounds on social media. Public broadcaster Yle reports Murola uses terms like “pest,” “bearded face,” and “garbage people,” as well as the highly offensive racial slur “nigger.” Murola admits to using “sharp” language but doesn’t see a problem with his actions, defending the slur by claiming it was common during his school years and is used amongst African Americans. Experts suggest his actions could potentially constitute a crime. The incident has sparked outrage and raised questions about acceptable language in political discourse. Authorities are now considering whether his posts violate Finnish law. The politician represents the far-right Finns Party (ps).
