Finland inaugurated an 8.4-kilometer (5.2-mile) road connection to the island of Hailuoto today, eliminating the need for a ferry. The bridge, the longest in Finland, provides a permanent road link to the previously isolated island municipality. Construction on the project began in 2019 and aims to improve accessibility and boost the local economy. Previously, access to Hailuoto relied on a seasonal ferry service, which was often disrupted by weather conditions. The new bridge is expected to significantly reduce travel times and enhance the quality of life for residents. The project cost approximately 110 million euros and was funded by the Finnish government. The opening marks a significant infrastructure development for the region.
