An investigation by the BBC reveals that FIFA President Gianni Infantino took at least 27 private jet flights during the group stage of the recent World Cup in North America. Over sixteen days, he attended 24 matches across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, accumulating over 50,000 kilometers of travel and 66 hours of flight time. The longest single flight was over 4,500 kilometers, from Vancouver to Miami. On some days, the jet completed three flights, enabling Infantino to attend multiple games in a single day. The BBC estimates the jet’s carbon emissions during this period equaled the annual output of 78 average people globally, though the exact figure remains unknown. FIFA acknowledged the President undertakes frequent travel for work but defended the use of private jets as “efficient and cost-effective,” declining to provide further details regarding passenger numbers or carbon offsetting measures.
