Authorities in Dhaka, Bangladesh have seized 19 sacks of adulterated turmeric powder during joint raids in the Farashganj and Shyambazar areas. The operation was conducted by the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and consumer rights groups. Four businesses were fined a total of 170,000 taka (approximately $1,600 USD) for packaging and selling the substandard spice. The raids followed intelligence reports regarding the production, packaging, and distribution of fake and low-quality spices in the area. Police initiated the action based on these reports, targeting locations known for spice trading. This action aims to protect consumers from fraudulent products and maintain market standards. Further investigations are underway to identify and prosecute others involved in the production and sale of adulterated spices.
