A scam involving fraudulent SMS messages impersonating traffic violation notices is targeting Bangladeshi citizens. The messages claim vehicles have violated traffic signals and demand immediate payment to avoid legal action. These SMS messages contain a link mimicking the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) website. Victims, fearing legal repercussions, are tricked into clicking the link and subsequently having approximately 300,000 taka (roughly $3,000 USD) stolen from them. Authorities have not yet commented on the scale of the scam or preventative measures. The scam exploits concerns about official penalties and utilizes sophisticated website mimicry to deceive recipients. Citizens are advised to be cautious of unsolicited messages requesting financial transactions and to verify information directly with the BRTA.
