A new study reveals that exclusive breastfeeding significantly reduces the risk of infant illness. Researchers found that babies exclusively breastfed are 72% less likely to be hospitalized with intestinal infections and 57% less likely with respiratory infections. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends initiating breastfeeding within the first hour of birth, exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, and continued breastfeeding for two years or beyond with complementary foods. While Mongolia has relatively good breastfeeding rates internationally, recent data shows a decline in exclusive breastfeeding up to six months (59.8%) and continued breastfeeding (69.7%). Experts emphasize the need for strengthened support, policies, and collaboration between various stakeholders to promote breastfeeding. Investing in breastfeeding support generates high returns, with an estimated $59 in socio-economic benefits for every $1 invested in health systems.
