Colombia’s Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) has confirmed the first sentence related to the “false positives” scandal, convicting retired Colonel Germán León for his role in the extrajudicial killings of 31 young people and farmers. The “false positives” scandal refers to the systematic killing of civilians by the Colombian military and subsequent reporting of them as guerrillas to inflate body counts and receive rewards. León did not initially accept responsibility for the executions. The JEP found him culpable for the murders committed between 2006 and 2008. This ruling marks a significant step towards accountability for state agents involved in human rights abuses during Colombia’s decades-long armed conflict. The JEP was established as part of the 2016 peace agreement with the FARC rebel group to investigate and prosecute those responsible for war crimes. Further details of the sentence will be announced at a later date.
