A new report from the European Environment Agency (EEA) assesses the quality of swimming waters across Europe. The findings indicate that the vast majority – 85 percent – of European bathing waters are of excellent quality. Furthermore, 96 percent meet minimum safety standards established by the EU. However, the report also reveals that 1.5 percent of tested waters are classified as poor quality, indicating potential health risks for swimmers. The assessment provides a snapshot of water quality as of 2025, informing public health and environmental monitoring efforts. The EEA’s research highlights overall positive trends in European water management, while also pinpointing areas needing improvement to ensure safe recreational waters for all.
