A heatwave gripping Europe has resulted in multiple fatalities, including two young children found dead in a car in southern France. Investigators believe the extreme heat was the primary cause of death for the children, aged two and four, discovered in Carpentras. France has also reported thirteen drowning deaths and three heat-related deaths among the elderly during the heatwave. Authorities have implemented widespread measures, including school closures, transport disruptions, and remote work directives, to mitigate the impact of the record-breaking temperatures. A recent study links the increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves to climate change, noting a rise in global heat stress exposure over the past 50 years. France broke its average temperature record for June, reaching 29.2C, with red alerts now in effect for over half of the country’s departments, impacting 39 million residents.
