The European Union has intercepted an oil tanker suspected of belonging to Russia’s “shadow fleet” operating in the Mediterranean Sea, as announced by EU foreign policy chief Kallas. This action aims to disrupt the flow of funds supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine through illegal oil sales. The intercepted vessel, the MV SUN, was boarded by EU marines to verify its flag and compliance. This marks the sixth ship associated with the shadow fleet intercepted by the EU in recent months, highlighting increased efforts to enforce sanctions. The shadow fleet, comprised of over a thousand vessels, obscures the origin of sanctioned goods like Russian oil by sailing under false flags and often disabling tracking transponders. Discussions on further actions against this fleet are planned at an upcoming meeting of European defense ministers in Dublin. Some nations, however, hesitate to intercept these ships due to fears of retaliation from Moscow.
