Ethiopian authorities have expelled Augustine Passily, a correspondent for the French newspaper La Croix, from the country. Passily, accredited to work in all regions since 2023, was ordered to leave while returning from a three-day reporting trip to Tigray, a region recently affected by conflict between 2020 and 2022. The expulsion occurred despite her official accreditation allowing her to work freely within Ethiopia. La Croix’s international editor, Thomas Hofnug, expressed concern over the incident, viewing it as a troubling signal for journalism and press freedom. The move raises questions about the ability of international media to report independently from Ethiopia, particularly in sensitive regions like Tigray. No official reason for the expulsion has been publicly released by the Ethiopian government. This incident follows a pattern of restrictions on press access in the country.
