Estonia’s energy minister, Erkki Keldo of the Reform Party, is pushing for a complete and permanent end to the transit of Russian gas through the Baltic states. Keldo intends to collaborate with Latvia to achieve this goal, aiming to eliminate Russia’s ability to utilize the region for gas exports. The initiative seeks to cut off a revenue stream for Russia and further diminish its energy influence in the region. Should negotiations with Latvia prove unsuccessful, Estonia is prepared to explore alternative measures to stop the flow. This move follows ongoing efforts by several European nations to reduce reliance on Russian energy sources. The Baltic states have long been vulnerable due to their reliance on Russian energy infrastructure. This action underscores a commitment to energy independence and security within the region.
