Estonia’s parliament has approved an amendment to lower the minimum voting age in European Parliament elections from 18 to 16. The legislation also reduces the minimum age for candidates from 21 to 18, changes set to come into effect in 2029. The amendment passed with 59 votes in favor and 28 against, granting voting and candidacy rights to Estonian citizens and EU citizens with permanent residency in Estonia. Forty-five Members of Parliament initially proposed the change in March 2024, advocating for increased youth involvement in European policy discussions. Supporters believe the lowered age will empower young people to shape decisions concerning their future within Europe. The change reflects a push to better represent the views of younger generations in the European political landscape. Further details on this development can be found at Estonian World.
