Five passengers who shared a flight with a French doctor recently diagnosed with Ebola are being held in isolation as a precautionary measure, according to French health officials. The doctor contracted the virus while working with the humanitarian organization Alima in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which is currently experiencing a significant Ebola outbreak. The individuals were seated near the doctor on an Air France flight from Kinshasa that landed in Paris. They will be monitored for 21 days, the virus’s incubation period. The doctor began experiencing headaches during the flight and sought medical attention, and is currently in stable condition in hospital. The WHO has stated there is no cause for panic, noting that fewer than thirty Ebola infections have been recorded outside of Africa in the last fifty years, and the risk to other European countries is considered low. The ongoing outbreak in the DRC has already resulted in 1118 confirmed cases and at least 267 deaths, with the WHO noting the rapid spread is concerning.
