A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan today, resulting in one confirmed fatality and six injuries. The quake hit Gao County, within the city of Yibin, at 1:08 PM local time according to the China Earthquake Networks Center. As of 4:30 PM local time, authorities reported the casualties and stated all injuries were minor. Following the event, 17 rescue teams, comprising 183 personnel with 44 vehicles and 552 equipment units, were dispatched to the affected area. Approximately one hundred homes sustained damage, but essential infrastructure – including electricity, telecommunications, gas, and water supplies – remained operational. Chinese authorities are continuing to assess the full extent of the damage and provide aid to those affected.
