The Dutch People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) is presenting a new Liberal Manifesto at its upcoming congress, aiming to redefine the party’s direction after a period of internal division. Developed with input from various party levels – including parliamentary and European representatives – the manifesto addresses contemporary challenges like geopolitical instability and artificial intelligence, replacing the party’s previous guiding document from 2005. The initiative seeks to restore a clear ideological profile for the VVD, which party members felt had become diluted through compromises made during previous coalition governments. Recent years have seen the emergence of distinct factions within the VVD, with disagreements over policy direction and coalition partners, notably the recent collaboration with the PVV. These factions, including “Klassiek Liberaal” and “De Nieuwe VVD,” have engaged in internal debate and criticism. The manifesto intends to bridge these divides by refocusing on core liberal principles such as freedom, responsibility, and tolerance. The core group behind the manifesto believes a shared commitment to these principles can unite the party.
