A restaurant in Mander, Netherlands, owned by Martin Bels, suffered catastrophic flood damage during a wedding reception last Friday. Heavy rainfall caused a nearby brook to overflow, inundating the restaurant with up to one meter of water. Approximately 150 wedding guests were safely evacuated by firefighters, with no injuries reported. Bels estimates the damage to be around two million euros, representing forty years of work and investment. Despite the devastation, the community has rallied around Bels, offering donations, aid, and volunteer support, including over 32,000 euros raised through crowdfunding. Bels, who inherited the restaurant from his parents, is determined to rebuild, seeking strength from his family’s memory and the outpouring of public support. The restaurant remains closed while the extent of the damage is assessed and recovery plans are made.
