Dutch Railways (NS) will introduce line numbers for all train services next year, mirroring systems already in place for buses, trams, and metros in the Netherlands and many other countries. This change aims to simplify train identification for passengers, using numbers in addition to destinations and schedules. Intercity trains and Sprinters will each have unique numbers, such as IC6 and S75, respectively. NS believes this will improve communication during disruptions and maintenance, allowing for clearer instructions to passengers. A trial is underway at Amersfoort Centraal station to gather passenger feedback on the new system’s clarity. The railway is also launching a public design competition for a new route map incorporating the line numbers, with submissions accepted until August 14th. Passenger advocacy group Rover supports the initiative, anticipating improved travel information for riders.
