A member of the Dutch Parliament, Ronald van Tiggelen of the PVV party, has been sentenced to 200 hours of community service after driving into a climate activist during an Extinction Rebellion protest. The incident occurred in Haarlem last year when the activist blocked the entrance to a parking garage while protesting Tata Steel. Van Tiggelen was on his way to a party meeting and claimed he did not see the woman, alleging a protest banner obstructed his view. However, the court deemed his explanation “unbelievable” after reviewing security camera footage of the collision. He was convicted of attempted aggravated assault, leaving the scene of an accident, dangerous driving, and disrupting a meeting. The activist sustained a concussion and injuries to her back and knee. Van Tiggelen maintains his innocence and previously stated he had no intention of causing harm.
