A Dutch court sentenced a mother and father to two years in prison, with seventeen months suspended, for abducting their two children in Dalfsen, Netherlands. Samantha F. and Michaël van K. took their 11-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son, who had been placed in foster care, in March of last year. The abduction triggered an Amber Alert after the daughter was taken while cycling to school and the son from his care home, reportedly under threat of violence with a stun gun. Police located the children safe and well in a Belgian apartment in Oudenaarde a day later. The parents claimed they believed the children were wrongly removed from their care in 2021 and feared losing parental rights. The court condemned their actions as taking the law into their own hands, emphasizing the premeditation involved in the abduction, including disguises and a planned escape route through Germany. As they have already served the unconditional portion of their sentence during pre-trial detention, they will not return to prison.
