A significant number of Dutch municipalities are considering a total ban on fireworks for the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebrations. A survey by the AD newspaper revealed that at least a quarter of municipalities, approximately 99 out of 200 responding, intend to prohibit all fireworks, even for organized events. While a new law allows clubs and local associations to apply for permits, many municipalities cite insufficient time to process applications and a lack of enforcement personnel as reasons for the ban. Several large-city mayors previously voiced similar concerns regarding staffing. A further 42 municipalities will consider exemptions but are expected to be restrictive, with some limiting permits to one per town. Notably, few applications for exemptions have been received from organizations thus far.
