A high-level Dutch delegation, including the Vice-Premier for Asylum and Migration and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, visited Syria to discuss the country’s reconstruction following the conflict and the potential return of Syrian nationals currently residing in the Netherlands. The visit focused on deepening existing collaboration on rebuilding efforts, with the Dutch government stating this is also in the Netherlands’ national interest. Discussions with Syrian President Sharaa included the possibility of both voluntary and, for those whose asylum claims have been rejected, enforced repatriation. Dutch officials reported a willingness from Syrian authorities to receive returnees who can contribute to the country’s development. The Netherlands seeks a broader partnership encompassing economic development and reconstruction in exchange for accepting returnees. The government acknowledges many Syrians in the Netherlands are nearing the end of their asylum procedures and are unlikely to be granted residency, prompting the search for new agreements with Damascus.
