Immigration to the Netherlands decreased in 2023 by approximately 8,000 people, marking the third consecutive year of decline, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). This decrease is primarily attributed to fewer asylum seekers and skilled migrants arriving from outside the European Union. Asylum applications fell by over 4,000 to nearly 35,000, representing around 11% of all immigrants. Despite the drop in arrivals, the Netherlands faces an asylum accommodation crisis due to slow processing and a lack of available housing for those granted refugee status. The planned distribution law aimed at fairer allocation of asylum seekers across municipalities is facing resistance, with many local governments failing to meet their obligations. The number of skilled migrants from outside the EU nearly halved since 2022, particularly from India, Turkey, Russia, China, and South Africa, with a total of 309,000 immigrants arriving in the Netherlands in 2023.
