Ben Jones, best known for his role as Cooter Davenport in the 1980s television series "The Dukes of Hazzard," has died at the age of 84. The show, a popular action-comedy, followed the adventures of cousins Bo and Luke Duke as they battled the corrupt Boss Hogg and inept law enforcement in the American South. Jones’ character, Cooter, was the Dukes’ mechanic and a key ally, appearing in 141 episodes. Following the series’ success, Jones continued to capitalize on his fame with Cooter’s Place merchandise stores and reunions with cast members. Beyond acting, Jones pursued a political career, serving in the U.S. House of Representatives for Georgia in 1988 and 1990, leveraging his television popularity. According to his wife’s Instagram post, Jones passed away from a heart attack and was weeks away from his 85th birthday.
