The Malaysian Transport Ministry is preparing to propose legal amendments requiring drivers convicted of driving under the influence (DUI) to financially compensate families of road accident victims. A Cabinet memorandum outlining the changes is currently being drafted. This amendment aims to provide financial support to families impacted by DUI-related accidents. Currently, compensation is not automatically mandated in such cases. The proposed law seeks to address this gap and ensure accountability for those driving while intoxicated. Details of the compensation amounts and implementation mechanisms are yet to be finalized and will be included in the memorandum. The initiative was announced in response to questions raised in the Dewan Rakyat (Parliament).
